Dunno about the default part but you need to try and negotiate with SKY. Try offering to pay half up front and the balance in instalments. They will be flexible as long as they see a payment and an offer to clear the outstanding unlike say council tax or rent arrears. They will possibly put your box back on too. Good luck!

- Normally when the contract ends, or you end it, you lose all Sky programmes except the freeview channels. In theory they can reclaim the box, but they never do as it's uneconomic to do so. So as long as you are not receiving Sky specific channels they can't pursue you. If you are, you owe and they can chase you and bugger your credit rating if you don't cough up.
- Yes.
Why not get rid of Sky and go freeview.
