Hi can changing your name improve your credit history?

Resolved Question

Hi can changing your name improve your credit history?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Most companies check your credit history under your name and Social Security number. So changing your name wouldn't help much (for example, if you are a female, get married and take the last name of your husband, they'd still track you down).

  • No. When you complete any application form for a loan / credit card etc, you will be asked if you have ever been known by a former name. Once you have disclosed your former name, all of your credit history can be accessed. Also, when you notify your personal bank of your name change, they will notify credit reference agencies.

  • My own credit history doesn't need improving. However, to answer your question generally, changing your name won't help in the slightest. The records will simply transfer over. If you are talking about a false name, that is illegal.
