Can I reclaim a deposit made by credit card on any retail items if I do not have a written contract with the s?

If they went bankrupt & failed to deliver, and the (total) cost is over £100, then YES ...
If you simply changed your mind, well, it rather depends what the item was .. for example, if it's a package tour (holiday) not only will your loose your deposit but they may come after you for the rest of the costs as well ..
In the hotel industry (for example) I believe they can only keep your deposit if they are unable to let 'your' room to another customer ... (if 'your' room is non-specific, then that would mean they would need to be fully booked before 'your' room is resold) ..
